A pure scattered-field based FDTD method for scattering problems

In this paper, a FDTD method based on a pure scattered-field formulation is introduced to analyze the electromagnetic interaction of a handheld transceiver unit and a human head model in personal communication systems. An orthogonal rectangular grid is used and the computational space domain is terminated using the transparent absorbing boundary. The specific absorption rates in various tissues in a head model are calculated and plotted. The computer program for the FDTD scheme summarized in the paper has been made adequately flexible to accommodate modeling of a wide variety of antenna types and tissue topologies.
