This article raises the issues like reliability of search engine ranking mechanism. It brings to light the commercial interest and bias of search engines favoring rich and popular Web sites while retrieving and ranking them. Due to political as well as commercial considerations some sites are given preferential treatment whereas many are ignored and even alleged to be manipulated while ranking on their databases. They are not transparent and do not bring these covert treatments to the notice of the users. The article also expresses concern over the influence of search engines in forming public opinion regarding social issues and possibility of directing and controlling opinions of netizens with fast growing, vast and strong global media.
