The Green Dam in Algeria as a tool to combat desertification

Desertification is a major risk that threatens the arid and semi arid regions throughout the globe. The increase of human needs, which results in the acquisition of new natural areas (urbanization) cultivation, overgrazing and regression of natural areas, deforestation, combined with climatic changes lead to the outbreak of desertification. Algeria as many countries are not safe from this risk, as agronomists and ecologists found that alfa grass were reduced and the quality of the grasselands become increasingly degraded, aware of this serious risk, the Algerian authorities undertook a massive reforestation program for the safeguarding and development of pre-Saharan areas, thus was born the idea of Green Dam.
