Jii the present paper we address ourselves to the following question: Can we find appropriate segmental units for any rigorously defined process of phonetic concatenation? Traditionally, in linguistic description, we have dealt with phonemes as the segmental units. As we look at phonetic details, however, it is too easy to find empirical objections to this approach in that the notion of concatenation as the basic operation to relate such elementary units to larger forms is ill-defined. That is to say, we find many cases of nonassiinilative variation in the phonetic realization of the phonemes,
