5G Wireless Access

This chapter covers the background to, and basic principles for 5G wireless access. It describes the key requirements for 5G wireless access, including the requirements of IMT-2020 as defined by ITU. It goes on to discuss the 5G spectrum situation and the overall structure of 5G wireless access consisting of the evolution of LTE in combination with a new radio-access technology. Finally, it gives an overview of the 3GPP process with regard to 5G, including the time schedule developed to ensure timely 5G commercial introduction in 2020.
