Hydrodynamic Optimization Using SHIPFLOW

A method for optimising ship hulls from a hydrodynamic point of view is introduced. By linking the SHIPFLOW system for computing the flow around the hull to a mathematical optimisation routine a given shape may be automatically modified in such a way that certain characteristics are optimised, considering given constraints. In the paper a brief introduction of the theories behind SHIPFLOW and the optimiser is given and two examples are presented. In the first case the bulbous bow of a Ro-Ro ship is optimised from a wave resistance point of view and in the second case the total resistance of a canoe-like hull is minimised by changing the shape of the entire hull. Significant resistance reductions are predicted in both cases.
