The Smithfield Project: a comprehensive service for dependent drinkers

This paper describes the components of the Smithfield Project in Manchester, UK. The project provides a comprehensive service for people who experience severe problems with alcohol through combining health and social care interventions. The paper describes the three key elements of the scheme: a 22-bed direct access residential detoxification service, a day centre and two short-stay hostels. A profile of the client group and their use of the project is also provided.
