CYTOGENETIC STUDIES IN KARYOTYPE AND DNA OF JAPANESE LOWER VERTEBRATES. X. STUDIES IN 15 SPECIES CYPRINIDAE

The family Cyprinidae of Japan comprises 26 genera and 53 species. The pioneer work of the chromosome study of Japanese Cyprinidae was done by Makino (1939). Nogusa (1960) studied the chromosomes of 20 species involving 15 genera by means of the classic testis-section method. Recent advances in cytogenetic techniques have facilitated analysis of the chromosomes more precisely and reliably than those done through classic techniques. Some kinds of fishes have been reinvestigated by modern techniques particularly on the chromosome morphology with remarkable findings. Ohno and Atkin (1966) proposed polyploidization of the original vertebrate genome as a factor of vertebrate evolution; they found a diploid-tetraploid relationship in the family Cyprinidae on the basis of both the chromosome complement and DNA contents (Ohno et al. 1967). The present study was undertaken with a hope to obtain any critical information for understanding some evolutional relationship in the Cyprinidae of Japan.
