Charge Carrier Mobility in Polyolefins

The conventional time of flight technique is applied to measure charge carrier mobility in common polyolefins (PE and PP) at room and elevated temperatures. The most detailed results are obtained for PE alkathene. Its hole mobility (typically 5 × 10−13 m2/Vs at 300 K) is marked by a well defined cusp even at room temperature and is independent of the applied field and film thickness. The same pattern of behaviour is observed in commercial films of PE and PP but only at elevated temperatures. Electrons are thought to be almost immobile in polyolefins. The apparent activation energy of hole drift mobility is found to be rather high (>0.7 eV). Comparison with RIC results in the polymers tested is also briefly discussed.
