Diabetic Foot: Charcot Neuropathic Osteoarthropathy

Charcot foot has been identified only in a small percentage of patients with diabetes, making it difficult for health care providers to diagnose and treat. Because of the delay in treatment, this condition progresses to new ulcer formation in nearly half the patients and this delay can also increase their risk of amputation and survival. The incidence of Charcot foot osteoarthropathy has been reported to be greater in non-Hispanic whites than in Mexican Americans (11.7/1,000 vs 6.4/1,000; P = .0001). Jean-Martin Charcot, a French physician, first described the Charcot foot in 1868, but it was reported earlier by American physician John Kearsley Mitchell (1798–1858) in 1831. The condition of Charcot foot began to appear in the literature in connection with persons with diabetes around 1936.
