A Novel Fault Detection Technique using wavelet transform During Power swing

Differentiation of symmetrical fault and power swing is the major challenge of a distance relay in Transmission line. This paper mainly focuses on the fault detection and section identification during power swing using a new formula and MRA (Multi Resolution Analysis) based wavelet technique for the normal fault detection. Here we have proposed MRA based wavelet technique for discriminating between power swing and fault. It also classify the different types of fault (symmetrical and unsymmetrical fault) with their inception at different location of power system. The method is tested in 3 machine 9 bus WSCC (Western System Coordinating Council) system at different location and different distance of the transmission line during power swing in EMTDC/PSCAD platform. The scheme is found to be fast and accurate for protection of power system using distance relay.
