With the involvement of so many individuals and organisations in interpreting the Iraq data, there is suspicious evidence of outside interference, a rising trend in public health research. It is time to ask the hard questions. When and how do we know that public health data and interpretation are being tampered with, and by whom? There are few topics as important as the health of civilians in confl icts. Yet eff orts to sanction investigators and silence future studies will severely reduce eff orts to document the health of neglected populations.
