A comparison of VoIP performance over three routing protocols for IEEE 802.11s-based wireless mesh networks (wlan mesh)

Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) is shaping up into a critical part of IP networks. Currently, the 802.11s group is defining a set of specifications to characterize a Wireless Mesh standard based on IEEE 802.11. Voice over IP (VoIP) service meanwhile, known to be a great concern from last decade, however before deploying such application in WMNs there is a need of investigating the WMNs capacity to support quality of service (QoS). When using VoIP, factors like delay, packet loss and overhead require special consideration. Motivated by the fact that path selection (routing) in WMN has a strong impact on the capacity to support VoIP connections, we investigate in this paper the comparison of VoIP performances over three reactive routing protocols in IEEE 802.11s-based WMN. The routing protocols considered in this comparison are: Adhoc On-demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV), Dynamic Source Routing (DSR) as well as Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (HWMP), which is defined by the 802.11s group for the upcoming IEEE 802.11s standard.
