Corneal epithelial glucose utilization.

Determination of in vivo glucose consumption in rabbits shows a utilization of at least 38μg/sq cm/hr for the whole cornea. Using a glued-on chamber, the epithelial glucose consumption is 16.9μg/sq cm/hr in oxygen, and 24.8 μg/sq cm/ hr in nitrogen. The results indicate that the limbal supply of glucose of 7.2 μg/sq cm/hr is inadequate to support the epithelium. Lactate production when the epithelium is present is higher in the presence of nitrogen that in the presence of oxygen, confirming that the shift to anaerobic glycolysis occurs mainly in the epithelium. In addition, it is found that the epithelial glycogen depot is rapidly mobilized by relatively gentle manipulation.
