Performance Analysis of Source Policing Architectures in ATM Systems

In ATM systems the usage parameter control UPC must be de ned very carefully to avoid network congestion due to users violating their negotiated tra c contract To guarantee a certain quality of service e g a given cell loss rate cells which are observed as non conforming are discarded by the UPC function In the tra c contract between the network and the user characteristics of the connection are described by several parameters like the peak cell rate and the cell delay variation tolerance as well as the sustainable cell rate and the burst tolerance To monitor both of these cell rates the generic cell rate algorithm was proposed by various standardization bodies Since a user can specify the peak and the sustainable cell rate together there exist several structural monitoring schemes for enforcing these cell rates In this paper we present exact analyses for four of these monitoring schemes The algorithms operate in discrete time domain and are of iterative nature Numerical results show that the structure of the considered schemes has only a minor in uence on the resulting rejection probability However some general statements about their performance can be given The author is now with Telecom Research Laboratories Clayton VIC Australia
