Amatoxins in American Mushrooms: Evaluation of the Meixner Test

A new spot test has been found useful in the detection of amatoxins and tryptamines in both fresh and dried mushrooms. The speed of the test makes it possible to test many individual carpophores of the same species for toxin content. This has been done for Amanita phalloides and A. virosa. Seventeen other species of Amanita were also examined and the results confirmed by thin-layer chromatography.
