Historical Notes on the Wilcoxon Unpaired Two-Sample Test

'HIS note is supplementary to an earlier review [10, Sec. 5.3 ] of Wilcoxon's test for the null hypothesis that two unpaired samples arise from the same population. The following topics are discussed: a proposal by G. Deuchler in 1914 for a technique equivalent to Wilcoxon's test, a related paper of the period by 0. Lipmann, J. W. Whitfield's 1947 approach to Wilcoxon's test, C. Gini's related concept of transvariation, and G. Ottaviani's work on sampling distributions for transvariation.
