Hybrid Bridge Girders: A Preliminary Design Example

The Texas Department of Transportation is investigating the use of hybrid box girders comprising prestressing steel, concrete flanges, and corrugated steel webs. They are hoping this can be a cost-saving measure over the more expensive precast-prestressed concrete U-beams for spans exceeding 120 feet. The design example shows the analysis of a hybrid girder subjected to vertical loads and includes step-by-step configurations and computations for checking slab stresses and moment capacity, corrugated steel webs and shear connectors.
