A higher order approximation for non-linear normal modes in two degree of freedom systems

Abstract Explicit approximate expressions for normal modal curves in non-linear two degree of freedom systems are obtained by applying a perturbation method to the modal equation: 2(h − V)y″ + (1 + y′ 2 )(V y − y′V x = 0. The results are not valid in the neighborhood of V = h.
