Recognition based Verification for the Machine Readable Travel Documents

This paper proposes on character region extraction method and picture separation in passport by preprocessing phase for passport recognition system. Character regions that need in recognition make black pixel and remainder of the passport regions makes white pixel in the detected character spaces. This method uses MRZ sub-region in order to automatically decide threshold value of binary image and this value is applied to the other character regions. And this method executes horizontal/vertical histogram projection in order to remove picture region in binary image. After region detection of picture area, the image part of passport is stored for the database of face images. The remainder of the passport is composed of character part. Recognition on the extracted character is done on the various different passports. From the obtained information, self-correlation algorithm using extracted characters are accomplished after character recognition. A cross-check process of MRZ information and field information of passport on similarity is implemented.
