Status Report on LORAN/Inertial Simulation Procedures.

Abstract : RATIONS REQUIRE THE INVESTIGATION OF ALTERNATIVES TO HIGH PRECISION NAVIGATION SENSORS. One alternative is a hybrid LORAN/inertial system whose components' accuracy specifications are somewhat relaxed. The hybrid system uses the long term position error stability of LORAN to restrain the divergent inertial platform error. The inertial system provides velocity, altitude, and heading as well as smoothed position as required. The synthesis of such a system depends on the establishment of a good computer simulation approach which, in turn, relies upon valid sensor models. Sensor model development begins with the constraints of Army mission requirements and a knowledge of the hardware, continues with the determination of an appropriate mathematical model, and concludes with a hardware verification phase.
