Exposure-risk analysis of large truck naturalistic driving data

This paper reports highlights of the exposure-risk analysis, comparing the conditions of occurrence of these incidents to control data from analyst observations of randomly selected baseline driving epochs. Compared to baseline epochs (exposure), safety-critical events occurred much more frequently on non-divided highways, in construction zones, at or near intersections, on entrance/exit ramps, during daylight, and when traffic density was high. Extreme disproportionate risk was also observed among the 95 drivers in the study. This is the largest naturalistic driving study ever conducted on long-haul commercial driving, and is among the first to perform systematic exposure-risk analysis.
