Analysis of a Coupling Made of Shape Memory Alloy and Its Dynamic Response Due to Impacts

This article presents a method for designing a shape memory alloy coupling between rods subjected to axial or torsional forces. The design formula is obtained analytically by using the stress-strain relation of the shape memory alloy. Since the coupling work is simple, the coupling has advantages for building members in dangerous zones. However, the coupling force is not enough, so that it has disadvantages for impact loads. To design the coupling under the consideration of impacts, this paper also discusses a transient response of the coupling for various impact loads. Numerical calculations were carried out for some sample problems.
