A simplified analysis of the rolling of a cylinder on a rigid/perfectly plastic half-space

Abstract Slip-line field techniques are used to analyse the problem of a rigid cylinder rolling on a rigid/perfectly plastic half-space. It is found that three types of deformation pattern can arise. Approximate formulae are derived which relate the horizontal and vertical load components with the applied torque. In addition expressions for the ratio of advance to peripheral speed and for the permanent displacement of surface elements of the half-space are obtained. These formulae are compared with analogous expressions for elastic materials.
