A Study of Adhesion Between the Rails and Running Wheels on Main Lines: Results of Investigations by Slipping Adhesion Test Bogie

Many experiments have hitherto been made to analyse the adhesion between the rails and running wheels which affects the performance of rolling stock profoundly. However, most of such experiments have been made in laboratory rooms, and even those made on main lines have simply yielded a medley of data obtained at the spots of wheel slipping. The author constructed a ‘slipping adhesion test bogie’ designed upon a new idea of measuring the coefficient of adhesion continually while running and observed the state of adhesion on main lines. From the results thus obtained, the author discussed the state of adhesion, referring to the adhesion decreasing factors, derived the statistically processed coefficients and confirmed the utility of the test bogie.
