Fuel production from biomass: Indian perspective for pyrolysis oil

This review presents current status of crude pyro-oil production in India from agro and forest based biomass with its limitations and the state of technologies for second and third generation fuel production. Also, bio oil obtained from hydropyrolysis of different bamboo species has been characterized. Bio-fuel production is reviewed as a two step process: i) raw biomass is converted in steps into crude pyro-oil and to a low calorific fuel substrates in gas, liquid or solid phase; and ii) these substrates are catalytically converted to high grade fuels and hydrogen.
