All-Optical WDM/TDM Star-Bus Network using Optical Amplifiers

We propose a broadband WDM/TDM star-bus network using EDFAs. Taps with different tap ratios are used to reduce the dynamic range of the power at the receivers. A network with NM customers can be implemented using N buses (wavelength assignments) and using optical TDM to support M users per bus. Three different variations and their protocols have been considered and compared. Calculation methods and their algorithms are devised to determine the number of stations to be supported for buses of different types of taps. By combining the advantages of the star and bus topologies along with the use of amplifiers and TDM technology, it becomes more efficient for a large number of customers to share a broadband network such as the Metropolitan Area Network.
