Letter from Copenhagen

(1) Should on-line information services be made available free of charge to all user communities? (2) Will the large-scale library commission work dealing with fundamental structural issues and policy matters bring us a step further towards the unified approach to library and information services, including the integration of I and D and librarianship? (3) In what directions should the emerging library and information research activity develop and which areas of study should receive first priority? (4) Will it be possible for educational programmes in library and information science to adapt to the trends in the expanding research activity and absorb its results, and will it be possible for them to anticipate and prepare for the increasing complexity and sophistication of information work? These are some of the crucial, or to some extent controversial issues, facing the Danish library and information profession today, which will be discussed below.
