Chapter 4 – Test Methods for Asphalt Binders

The chemical composition of asphalt and related products is complex, which makes it essential that the most appropriate analytical methods for binder testing are used. Furthermore, samples may be disturbed during sampling, storage, and pre-treatment. Also, most laboratory experiments impose steady environmental conditions, while in an outdoor climate these conditions show dynamic behavior. Thus, the manner in which the corrections are applied must involve quality data. It is the purpose of this chapter to present a comprehensive list of methods and techniques that are used for the analysis of samples. It is from the results of the application of these test methods that the binder is selected for used.
