Period doublings, bifurcations and strange attractors in a two-well potential oscillator

Poincare maps, and frequencies spectra, a comprehensive computer simulation study of the periodic and chaotic behaviours of the Duffing's oscillator with negative linear stiffness is presented. For fixed system parameters, the effect of decreasing the excitation frequency on the response characteristics is examined. In a range of frequencies characterized on either side by merely a periodic response of period-one motion, the transition form one periodic attractor, with a certain period, to another attractor, with a different period, through bands of chaos is investigated
