A hop, skip, and a jump

Abstract This chapter considers clinically relevant hip joint conditions in total hip replacement (THR) patients and reviews the tribology of THR. The perfect simulator test is discussed. However, a pragmatic view of the conditions is taken in a tribological context to define a series of hip wear simulator tests, which might be achieved on most, if not all, hip simulators with little or no modification. It is recommended that implant designs are subjected to the suggested simulator tests prior to clinical use to identify potentially successful designs and those which are likely to fail prematurely in vivo.
