Publisher Summary
This chapter discusses aspects of integrated management systems, in which many of the management functions apply to both environmental and quality systems. The use of energy and water, the creation and disposal of wastes, the use of materials and housekeeping, and site appearances are almost universal. Waste disposal and landfill tax, effluents, avoidance of pollution, and being aware of planning restrictions apply to every organization. It is estimated that about 20,000 licenses have been issued by the Environment Agency or local authorities in Britain under the Environmental Protection Act of 1990. The same structure has been used for the Occupational Health and Safety Management Standards (OHSAS 18001). All the different standards should be expressed within the organization as different facets of one management system.
