Learning Control Systems and Pattern Recognition.

Abstract : The report covers progress in the second year on a Project THEMIS contract for research in Learning Control Systems and Pattern Recognition. Topics covered include academic progress, system stability studies, digital predictive compensation, resolution improvement in pattern recognition systems, general purpose pattern classifiers and data acquisition, photo optic receptor systems, and thin film diode research. Section I covers academic progress, new courses developed as a result of the research program, graduate degrees obtained and publications in the technical literature of research results. Section II covers the determination of the degree of controllability which must be required of the system and digital predictive compensation system. Section II reports on the progress in pattern recognition, generally efforts to improve resolution, development of a system to collect and analyze pattern data, and development of a modular approach to a general purpose pattern classifier. Section IV reports progress in the development of photo sensitive receptor system. Research has been done on the use of fiber optic methods for converting from photo information to electronic information. Research continues on the development of thin film diode arrays. These offer promise of receptors of very high density, perhaps approaching a million individual elements per square inch. Section V relates the research to ultimate military goals and gives a general summary of the work. (Author)
