NCl(a1Δ) and I(52P12) production in a D/NCl3/HI transverse flow reactor

Abstract The reaction of excess hydrogen or deuterium atoms with NCl 3 in a transverse flow reactor is used to generate NCl(a 1 Δ) at densities up to 10 13 cm −3 . The NCl a→X emission scales linearly with the NCl 3 flow rate over the entire range of reagent densities utilized. Admission of HI to the system results in the quenching of NCl(a 1 Δ) and the production of I(5 2 P 1 2 ). Over the range of conditions studied, this energy transfer has an efficiency greater than 60%.
