Principles of Simulated Moving Bed

In this chapter the principles of simulated moving bed technology are presented, starting with the history of chromatography and the progress from batch to continuous chromatography (true moving bed, TMB, and simulated moving bed, SMB). The basic equation (De Vault equation) to understand adsorption is derived and a simple design method for binary separations based on the equilibrium theory and linear adsorption isotherms is presented, leading to the representation of separation/regeneration regions. The equivalence between TMB and SMB is discussed in terms of equality of relative fluid velocities and the relation between switching time in SMB and solid velocity in TMB. Old and new applications of SMB from petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries are discussed as well as conventional and nonconventional modes of operation of SMB.
