Radiodetermination satellite service: Applications in railroad management

Radiodetermination satellite service (RDSS) provides the means for accurate location of mobile transceivers and for the bi-directional exchange of short digital messages. Geosynchronous satellites are used to relay timing signals and messages between small, inexpensive transceivers and a fixed ground station, where precise range timings are combined with altitude data to calculate transceiver positions. The author is engaged in the application of this technology in transportation management, specifically in the railroad industry. The basic technique of RDSS is described and specific applications are suggested.
