Effect of Pressure on the Mössbauer Spectrum of Fe2(CO)9 and Fe3(CO)12

The effect of pressure to 160 kbars has been measured on the Mossbauer resonance in Fe2(CO)9 and Fe3(CO)12. Unenriched samples were used, but the major features are easily discernible. The di‐iron carbonyl exhibits a very large shift to higher electron density with increasing pressure, and a moderate increase in quadrupole splitting. Evidently there are changes both in 3d–3s shielding and in orbital occupation with pressure. The quadrupole splitting indicates no significant distortion with pressure. The Fe3(CO)12 has three peaks of equal intensity. The outer pair shifts to higher electron density by an amount comparable to the Fe2(CO)9. The inner peak shows a more modest shift. There is a significant increase in the splitting of the outer peaks with pressure. The results are discussed in terms of the most probable structures.
