Some applications of fuzzy sets to meteorological forecasting

Three cases in meteorological forecasting are studied in terms of fuzzy set theory. Firstly, climatic stages were divided by fuzzy clustering. Secondly, taking account of the various features of atmospheric circulation, the membership functions were designed for recognizing daily circulation patterns at 500 mb level. Thirdly, similar samples of 500 mb monthly mean charts were choosen by judging a preference ratio. These show that based on fuzzy mathematics some meteorological problems may be solved objectively and quantitatively. It is evident that the fuzzy sets theory is potentially a powerful tool for meteorological analysis and forecasting.
