LARGE SCALE FIELD TRIAL ON INTELLIGENT SPEED ADAPTATION IN UMEA, SWEDEN

There is a strong need to find alternatives to physical means to achieve speed reduction and prevent speeding in urban areas. From earlier Swedish field trials and investigations, Intelligent Speed Adaptation (ISA) has been found to be a possible alternative. Sweden is carrying out a national programme on ISA field trials in 1999-2001. The city of Umea is hosting the largest of these trials with more than 5000 vehicles and the main part of the city area included. The vehicles and the street network are equipped with a short range communication (SRC) infrastructure, thus allowing for the in-vehicle equipment to alert the drivers through light and sound signals, when speeding within the city.
