The Würzburg Matthew: status quaestionis

Wurzburg, M. p. th. f. 61, is a complex manuscript comprising a text of Matthew’s gospel, an extensive interlinear gloss, and 27 interleaved slips with glosses, some in Old Irish. Five hands are to be distinguished and each merits separate study. This is a report on my research to date. The gospel text is examined in regard to text-type and disposition. One important feature of the interlinear gloss, the ‘hucusque’ formula, is described. The Old-Irish glosses are examined and some other slips that are certainly Irish are analysed in regard to their use and development of sources.
