Linear subarray as element for high gain phased array radar with wide angular scanning beams

This paper discusses results derived from linear subarray synthesis with focus on realizing wide angular scanning patterns. The subarray synthesis is performed using the Fourier transform method applied on a small broadside linear array. The desired wide-beamwidth pattern of the subarray is approximated by a square root cosine theta pattern. This pattern satisfies the requirements for wide angular scanning phased array antenna applications due to its needed wide 3-dB beamwidth of around ±60°. By using such subarray pattern characteristic, the total phased array antenna pattern is shown to have only slight performance degradation in the maximum scan angle.
