Consolidation of Slurried Soils

This paper describes the use of large strain consolidation theory and centrifugal modelling to study the consolidation behavior of slurries. Laboratory testing of the slurry is needed to obtain two constitutive relationships of the material, namely, effective stress-void ratio and permeability-void ratio. A new automated large deformation consolidometer developed with this purpose is described. Results of several tests on a Florida phosphatic waste clay are presented and used to predict the quiescent behavior of a pond. The prediction agrees very well with the results of centrifugal modelling.
