Review on an Expert System under Development "Measurement Techniques in Civil Engineering" Including Structural Assessment

Expert systems can be of sigruticant help in solving problems where a broad and interdisciplinary knowledge is needed. Expert systems are characterized by sepemtexi knowledge and knowledge processing parts so that the impkzlwaed kwvledge can be modiiied in an easy way (e. g. for the updating of standards or in order to meet with other demands). These methods of artificial int&igence are used in order to evaluate structures on the basis of vibration measurements. Consequently, the knowledge of different subjects (civil engineering, maswing techniques) is made accessible for the User. A highly tlexible expzrt system shell was developed, uhich is based on the prcqmm& language LISP. The expert system shell is able to integrate external programs (i. e. databases, data acq”isition, dcnunatation and analysis programs, FE-pm. grams). Due to the rules and the demons that have been developed till now the system is able to choose the appropriate trzlnsdum tiom a database a&r having been given the desaiption of the struct”re under test a.9 well as the basic demands. A cable-stayed bridge serves as a benchmark-test. Furthermore, the program assists the user canying out and evaluating the results of the “leas-e”ts, e. g. acconiing to DIN standard 4150 (assessment of vibrations within buildings). For the fuhx+ it is one of the objectives of the research group to we the measv~ed values in order to enable a highly automatical model cmlecti”rl within the expert system. Then, the model which has been verified in this way can be wed to as--s.
