QoS-based vertical handoff in heterogeneous networks

We investigate a new architecture for multimedia communication based on IEEE 802.21, performing handover between different wireless networks, independently by media. Seamless handoff is a benefit to maintain service flows with a guaranteed Quality-ofService level, (QoS-Lev). In the proposed architecture we are dealing with videostreaming services. The mobile node (MN) monitors received QoS level, according to a No-Reference video quality metric (NR-VQM). Handoff process is also controlled by the serving network, on the basis of QoS parameters for DiffServ applications, also referred in the following as Video Quality Measurements (VQMs). A scheme of proposed handoff is presented, based on a combination of mobile node subjective NR-VQM and VQMs. Keywords— Vertical handover, QoS, UMTS, WLAN.
