AN INTERNATIONAL REVIEW OF CHLORIDE INGRESS INTO STRUCTURAL CONCRETE

This report deals with the ingress of salt from the environment which can lead to severe corrosion of reinforcement. Since the banning of calcium chloride as an admixture for concrete in the UK in 1976, and with current limits on contamination of aggregates, the risk of corrosion resulting from cast-in chlorides is not significant. However, as long as salt is used for deicing, or structures are built on or close to the coast, the ingress of chloride will continue to be a primary factor in relation to durability. The report reviews the international state-of-the-art with regard to chloride ingress into concrete and, in particular, considers the following: (1) The influence of concreting materials, mix design, curing and environment; (2) Methods for detection of chloride ingress in structures; (3) Techniques used for studying chloride ingress.
