Gas hold-up in bubble columns

Abstract Experimental data on the fractional gas hold-up in a 10 cm I.D. bubble column with a single-nozzle gas sparger were obtained with various gases and pure liquids or aqueous solutions of non-electrolytes and the effect of the physical properties of the gas and the liquid on the gas hold-up was studied. A new dimensionless correlation for the fractional gas hold-up was presented and shown to correlate the experimental data with an average deviation of 4.2%. The gas hold-up for air in aqueous solutions of various electrolytes was also measured and the effect of the presence of electrolytes on the gas hold-up was investigated.
