The ROMANSE project was a key partner of the highly successful SCOPE project. The project was concerned with the development of Southampton as a model for transport management systems and the provision of timely and accurate travel information. To this end, the project has successfully developed a Traffic and Travel Information Centre to collect, collate and disseminate travel information. The centre acts as an information terminus with up-to-date data supplied by UTC, CCTV cameras, incident detection systems, public transport automatic vehicle location system, railway control centres, the Police and Trafficmaster. The information is relayed to the travelling public via real time bus stop displays (STOPWATCH), Information Display Units, local radio broadcasts, car park and route guidance Variable Message Signs, TRIPlanner public access multi-modal travel information points and BBC CEEFAX service. The paper outlines the further steps which are being taken to broaden the dissemination of accurate, timely travel information within the FP4 project EUROSCOPE. Pre-trip traveller information services will be enhanced by a frequently up-dated recorded telephone message line, an information service via cable TV and the establishment of a home page on the World Wide Web. Existing services will be expanded to provide city wide coverage including the expansion of STOPWATCH to a large scale demonstration trial and the location of more VMS. The data collection services will be extended with the installation of further CCTV sites, additional Information Display Units located and linking with other centres.
