FLY ASH SETS STANDARD FOR RECYCLED MATERIAL USE

The passage of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and the recognition and acceptance of flay ash as a recyclable material, has helped make it a standard bearer of recycled solid wastes such as rubber, plastic, glass, etc. Fly ash organizations and marketers are renforcing the engineering and construction value of flyash in the highway industry. The history of its use is reviewed in this article, as well as its characteristics. The advantages of its use in highway applications are discussed, as well as RCRA guidelines. Today, the industry is emphasizing the confrontation of institutional barriers connected to the use of higher percentages of fly ash in highway applications. The use of significant amounts of fly ash in highway-related projects in Alabama is noted.
