Although several studies have indicated that preschoolers cannot conserve number, even if tested on small quantities, in this study it was demonstrated that preschoolers show a remarkable degree of conservation when tested with small enough quantities. The results also suggest that the child's understanding of small quantities might possibly play a role in the development of conservation of larger quantities.
