Rhythmic habit patterns in infancy: their sequence, age of onset, and frequency.

KRAVITZ, HARVEY, and BOEHM, JOHN J. Rhythmic Habit Patterns in Infancy: Their Sequence, Age of Onset, and Frequency. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1971, 42, 399-413. The onset of hand to mouth sucking was studied in 140 normal newborn infants, and in 79 newborn infants of normal and low birth weight with low Apgar scores and neonatal disease. Results indicate a significant delay in hand sucking in abnormal newborn infants. The sequence, age of onset, and the frequency of other common rhythmic habit patterns was also recorded in 200 older infants. There is a marked delay in the onset of the common rhythmic habit patterns in infants with Down's Syndrome and cerebral palsy. Rhythmic habit patterns may be of value in the diagnosis of developmental retardation in infants.
